New to Bangkok Help Guide

We asked some of the long-term resident St. Georges councillors:

What is the one piece of advice you feel would be invaluable to a newcomer?

Here are some of their answers:

  • Be Cool - Take things in your stride and remember you are guest in this country "Sabai Sabai" as the Thai's say.  There are a lot of things in Thailand that are different, it can stress you out if you take them too seriously, try to keep smiling and enjoy the experience. Simon
  • Don’t believe anyone who tells you: “The Grand Palace is closed today!” Becky
  • Make sure your taxi drivers turn the meter on! David
  • Buy the ANZWG guide. (Alternatively known as The Bangkok Guide – Written by the Australian – New Zealand Women’s Group here in Bangkok) Available in Asia Book shops. Ann
  • Learn some Thai! The single most cause of  frustration is communication, even a little bit will help, you don't have to be fluent. Abbie & Sarah
  • Join as many social clubs and groups as you can, to begin with,  then decide what you want to do .... Memberships to most social groups here are not expensive, will give you the opportunity to meet people,  find out what’s going on and what is available. Renewing your memberships is not compulsory! Sarah
