The St. George's Ball 2005

The 45 th annual St. George’s Society Ball was held on Saturday, April 30th at the Conrad Hotel and enormous fun was had by all.

The evening started with the Baron of Beef Ceremony and saw Marianne Dallioux (Nell Gwyn), Greg Stefan (English policeman),Andrew McLean (the Town Crier), Simon Young (English policeman) and Richard Jones (the Beef eater) herald in the Baron of Beef, which was ably presented by Conrad chef Anthony Dawson to the President of the Society, Angela Stafford for tasting.

After she had ‘approved’ the beef and toasted the chef, we all tucked into a delicious meal to the sounds of the Royal Thai Army Band. As desert and cheese were being served, Kay Young and the British Ambassador, H.E. Mr David Fall, stepped forward to lead the community singing and ‘Last Night of the Proms’ session which included familiar British favourites, such as Jerusalem , Land of Hope and Glory and Rule Britannia. They did a fantastic job. The evening continued with disco music from Jam Entertainment DJ Paul Jackson and two live music sessions by the Bandit Beatles who had flown in from the UK . They had everyone bopping on their feet well into the very early hours of the morning. A traditional English breakfast was served at 2am and was as delicious as ever, with bacon, pork sausages, pork pies and black pudding supplied by our favourite English butchers “Yorkies Pork Platter”, from Pattaya. Thank you to all our generous sponsors for making the 2005 Ball possible and to the Council Members of Bangkok St George’s Society for their hard work in organising this successful event.

It has to be mentioned though, that Gale Bailey (one of our Council Members) and her husband were probably the happiest people there, after winning the first prize of KLM business class return tickets to the UK, a Nokia mobile phone and a weekend trip to Hua Hin Golf Resort !! They must have the luck of the English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh rolled into one!!
